Bali general information Area

Denpasar, witch means ‘Next to the Marked’, was an inportant trading centre, and the seat of local rajahs before the colonial period. The Dutch gained of northem Bali in the mid-19th century, but their take over of the south didn't start until 1906. The Dutch attucked at Sanur, and the Balinese retreated to Denpasar. There, under the threat of Dutch artillery, three princes of' the kingdom of Badung destroyed their own palaces, and made a suicidal last stand-a ritual puputan – in witch the old kingdoms of the south were wiped out.

Anyone, including the Bali holiday goers, with the great passion for Balinese history should not miss to acknowledge the factual occurrences happened in the past. In the last century, Denpasar was a strategic and prominent business and trading center. The history of this capital city was begun when the Dutch attained the northern part of Bali in the 19th century. At that time, the Dutch colonialism occupied Sanur and the Balinese people moved back to Denpasar. There was a tragic story when three princes of Badung Kingdom ruined their palaces and did the suicidal.

At that time, Singaraja regency stayed as the capital for Dutch administrative. There was an airport built in the south of the Singaraja city. This had made Denpasar as deliberate asset and advantage in World War II. When it came to Japanese invasion period, Denpasar was used as base to harass Java Island. After the World War II, the Dutch retreated to their base in Denpasar and since then, Denpasar has been becoming the capital City of Bali Island. Denpasar was known as part of Badung Regency but in the present time, Denpasar has its own authority and self-governing system, encompassing many areas such as Benoa Harbor and Sanur

Basically, Denpasar inhabitants were groups of immigrant which were Bugis, Chinese, Arabic, and Indian. Also, many people from Java and the other islands in Indonesia then came to Denpasar and then they become the civil servants, government officers, artisans, businessmen, laborers, traders, and many more. Until this moment, they have been living, working, and doing business on the island. However, that fact doesn’t affect the Balinese societies annoyed or bothered, instead they are all living in peace and harmony, keeping the island together.
